Deleting your account and data

Last updated: 5 July 2026

Memory Jar is local-first, so most of what you create never leaves your device. There are two separate things you might want to remove: the data stored locally on your device, and, if you turned on cloud features, your cloud account and its encrypted backup. You can remove either or both, at any time.

Delete the data on your device

Everything you put into Memory Jar is stored in an encrypted database on your device. To remove it:

  • Delete individual jars or notes inside the app, or
  • Uninstall Memory Jar. Uninstalling removes the app’s entire local database and every jar, note, photo, and voice note stored on the device.

Delete your cloud account and backup

If you created a cloud account (for backup or shareable keepsakes), you can delete it from inside the app:

  1. Open Memory Jar and go to Settings → Account.
  2. Tap Delete cloud account.
  3. Type delete account to confirm, then tap Delete my account.

This permanently deletes your account and its encrypted cloud backup, and it can’t be undone. Your jars stay on the device you’re using; to remove those, uninstall the app as above.

If you no longer have the app, or would rather we did it

Email support@memory-jar.app from the email address on your account and ask us to delete it. We’ll remove your account and its encrypted backup. We action deletion requests within 30 days, as required by UK GDPR.

Delete some data without closing your account

You don’t have to close your Memory Jar account to remove things we hold:

  • Cloud backup: turn off cloud backup in Settings to stop backing up, and email support@memory-jar.app if you’d like the stored backup erased while keeping your account.
  • Shared keepsakes: stop sharing a keepsake in the app and its hosted copy is deleted. The link stops working.
  • Shared jars: delete a memory you added to a shared jar and it is removed for every member.
  • On your device: delete individual jars, notes, photos, or voice notes in the app at any time.

You can also email support@memory-jar.app to ask us to delete specific data we hold, without closing your account. We action these within 30 days too.

What is deleted, and what is kept

  • Deleted: your account email address, your encrypted cloud backup, and the locked copy of your backup key that we stored. Once these are gone we hold no data about you. Because your backup was encrypted with a key only you held, we were never able to read it.
  • Not affected: the data stored locally on your device. That is yours and stays until you delete it in the app or uninstall.
  • Subscriptions: if you bought a subscription it is billed by Google Play, not by us, so deleting your account does not cancel it. Manage or cancel a subscription in the Google Play app under Payments & subscriptions.
