Terms of Use

Last updated: 5 July 2026

Acceptance

Memory Jar is provided by Joshua David Lawson, a sole trader trading as “appy lad” (“we”, “us”, “our”). By downloading or using the app you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

Your licence to use the app

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use Memory Jar on devices you own or control, for your own personal, non-commercial use. You agree not to copy, resell, reverse-engineer, or tamper with the app except where the law allows it.

Your content

Your jars, notes, photos, and voice notes are yours. You are responsible for what you put in the app and for having the right to store it. Because the app is local-first and your cloud data is end-to-end encrypted, we cannot see, moderate, or recover your content.

Free and paid features

Memory Jar is free to use, fully offline, with no account. Some features (cloud backup, hosted keepsake sharing, and voice memories) require a paid subscription.

  • Subscriptions are sold and billed through Google Play, and are subject to Google Play’s terms.
  • A subscription renews automatically until you cancel it. You can manage or cancel it any time in Google Play; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period.
  • Prices are shown in the app at the point of purchase and may change; we will not change the price of an active subscription without notice.
  • If your subscription lapses, you can still restore and read existing cloud backups; we never hold your memories hostage. Creating new hosted shares requires an active subscription.

Fair use and service limits

The cloud features (cloud backup and hosted keepsake sharing) are offered on a fair-use basis. We do not apply usage limits today. We may introduce or change reasonable limits in future, for example a storage limit per account, a maximum size for a shared keepsake, a limit on how many times a shared link can be opened, or how long a shared link stays available. If we introduce or change a limit, we will give you reasonable notice in the app first. Any limit applies going forward only: we will not use it to take away memories you have already backed up, and you will always be able to restore and read your existing cloud backups.

Your passphrase and recovery code

Cloud backup is protected by a passphrase and a one-time recovery code that only you hold. We design the app so that we genuinely cannot access them. If you lose both, we cannot recover your backup or reset them for you. Keep them somewhere safe, such as a password manager.

Acceptable use

Do not use Memory Jar to store or share unlawful content, or in any way that breaks the law or infringes someone else’s rights. When you share a keepsake link, you are responsible for who you share it with.

The app is provided “as is”

We work hard to make Memory Jar reliable, but it is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind to the extent the law allows. We do not guarantee the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will suit a particular purpose. Keeping your own additional copies of anything irreplaceable is sensible, and the free backup file exists for exactly that.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data arising from your loss of your passphrase or recovery code, device failure, or your own deletion of content. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law (such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud). Your statutory rights as a consumer are not affected.

Changes

We may update these Terms. We will update the date above and, for significant changes, surface a notice in the app. Continuing to use Memory Jar after a change means you accept the updated Terms.

Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction, without affecting any mandatory consumer-protection rights you have where you live.
